Personal Protection & Bite Work

What is Bite Work?

Bite work, sometimes also called protection work, refers to a specialized area of training and enrichment that focuses on preparing a dog for controlled, reliable scenarios involving a bite response. This work is conducted under strict safety protocols and involves the use of protective equipment.

Most commonly, bite work is fulfilled by Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherds, German Shepherds, and other protection breeds, but it is not a breed-exclusive activity. Some other purebred dogs, or mixed breed dogs, find fulfillment and purpose from engaging in controlled bite work.

Bite work training can be used for, and catered towards, personal defense, home defense, police and military use, security, and sport contexts (e.g. Schutzhund/IGP, PSA, French Ring, Mondioring, and other forms of competitive dog sport). Training typically includes building drive and control concurrently: bite targeting, grip development, high-level obedience under heavy distractions, and the ability to disengage on command.

Professional bite work training emphasizes responsible handling, ethical introduction methods, and the psychological well-being of the dog. Dog bite work is not about promoting uncontrolled aggression; rather, it’s about channeling natural instincts into structured behaviors that can serve specific roles and fulfill the innate drive and desire to work.

How do I Enroll in Bite Work Training?

Contact training@windriverkennels.com to schedule an evaluation. During this time, we will assess your dog’s temperament and drives (confidence, willingness to engage with food and toys, desire to work for a human handler, and etc.), and whether or not they are eligible to begin the track towards bite work training.

In order to qualify for and begin bite work training, all potential candidates MUST first demonstrate obedience, control, and stability in a public setting through passing an AKC Canine Good Citizen Test with Wind River Canine Partners. Dogs who have earned their CGC can begin Bite Work Private Lessons/Bite Work Foundations Board & Train.
